This competitive drill is designed for the guards to work on their full court moves and the forwards to work on transition defense versus an attacking ball handler. We call this drill Block Finish...emphasis of the drill is for the forwards to Block the shot at the rim and the guards to Finish the fastbreak with a scoring play.
The guard starts by attacking full court with their dribble. There is a defender near half court forcing the ball handler to make a move past a defender. Then the attacking guard continues up the court looking to score versus the forward defending in transition. The transition defender starts at the free throw line and must touch the mid court logo then retreat into transition defense position. This competitive 1 on 1 opportunity is when the drill is scored. We play the drill competitively Guards vs Forwards. Scoring is 2pts or 3pts for baskets and appropriate points for fouls on the play. Defense can score 2pts for a stop and 1pt for a block. The drill does not end after the 1 on 1 opportunity. The transition defender rotates out, but the guard attacking in transition goes up the other side of the court 1 on 0 looking to score in transition. These baskets scored by the guards do not count towards the competition. The Block Finish Drill creates a competitive environment in practice, plus gives you quality reps at critical 1 on 1 full court situation. Those battles may be the difference in a close game down the stretch. Go Bruins! |
