This drill is one that we use to get our competitive juices going early on in practice. In Full Court 1 on 1 we divide the team into Blue vs Gold, and then pair the players up with competitive match ups. Half of the competitive pairs go to the corner of the baseline and the other half go to the opposite corner on the other end of the floor. We line cones up from lane line extended to the 3pt line on both sides, thus creating the boundaries of the 1 on 1 full court lane. The offensive player starts with the ball and tries to beat the defender up the court and score. The defender tries to control the ball handler and make a defensive stop. These two players continue until the offensive scores or the defense gets the ball. Scoring is 2pts for a stop by the defense, 2 or 3pts for an offensive score, or 2pts if the defense commits a foul. Four minutes into the drill everyone switches directions on the floor, so that the offense is attacking to finish up the left side of the court. The scores are totaled at the end of the 8 minutes and the losing team has to run two line drills. This drill helps with our full court defense and transition defense, plus it works on our ball handling and finishes versus full court pressure. Let’s just say that this drill tends to bring force you to compete!
