This week our video emphasizes the little things in basketball that don’t always get rewarded on the stat sheet after the game. These little things add up to a big difference in the outcome. Our staff calls these “Passion Plays”. There are 6 categories of Passion Plays for our UCLA Bruins.
1.) Deflections – breaks up the timing and rhythm of the offense, initiates our fastbreak, and they may be the play that leads to the steal…
2.) 50/50 Balls – the loose ball, the tug-o-war, the dive on floor…hustle plays that fuel your team with energy
3.) Out of Area Rebounds – cover distance to get the ball, we call it tracking the ball off the rim
4.) Assist Screens – the passer gets the assist, but we also like to reward a great screen that helps our offense
5.) No Move Needed – these are deep seals at the rim, the easy catch and score play…what offense isn’t better with easy scores at the rim?!!
6.) Charges – maybe the single most selfless act in basketball, taking one for the team, the biggest momentum play there is!!
Each week we make a video to show our team making Passion Plays from the previous game. Our game goal for Passion Plays is usually somewhere over 50 Passion Plays each game. We also reward a Passion Player of the Week! That may be someone with the most total Passion Plays or someone who came through with Passion Plays in an area of focus for that game. Either way, I know that our players appreciate getting acknowledged for their heart, hustle & PASSION!!
