In this segment of Drill of the Week, we have Nirra Fields and Darexia Morris in a drill that combines reading and using a screen, ball handling, and conditioning.
In our program, we like to utilize our drill work to reflect what we do offensively and defensively. We place purpose on what we drill to connect to what we coach and teach. This drill captures a read out of our chin offense, where our guards have to be able to make the right read off the elbow screen. We teach each player to set their defender up at the screen; Hesitate at the point of screen; Call your cut off of the screen. As you see in this drill, you can make a variety of reads once you come to the screen. You can curl, flare, or basket cut, all depending on how you read your defender. Once you score, you will sprint to the sideline and work on your combination ball handle. This is a great way to have guards try new ways to combine some of their go to moves. We like to have our guards go through each rep at full speed and recover once they are back in line. Conditoning is vital in this drill because we want our players to be able to make the appropriate reads, and maintain a high level of skill when they are fatigued.
We hope you enjoy this one!
