After careful thought and contemplation about what it means to be a Bruin, I came up empty. I had trouble defining an experience so diverse into a few paragraphs. I don't think there is a one definition that captures what it means to be a Bruin nor do I feel that there needs to be.
I'm happy to say that at this point in my college career I can finally say I'm beginning to find myself. What it means to be a bruin is why I'm finding serenity in the place I've always called home.
Being a Bruin is tradition. It is the reputation that the school embodies and the unspoken pressures we all have to uphold that rich culture. Not only in sports but the impacts UCLA as a university has had on the greater Los Angeles area and the rest of the world.
Being a Bruin is opportunity – Opportunity to be whoever you want to be with everything at the palm of your hands. The opportunities are so diversified it's difficult to list them all. The range varies from impeccable athletic history and success, an education that is sought after by more applicants than any other university, business and career opportunities in the Mecca of industry, and cultural diversity that helps us all understand the world beyond our college experience.
To be a Bruin is all of that and everything in between. That cliche statement explains it all because to be a Bruin you can be whatever you want to be in a place where opportunity is always knocking and the beauty is too blatant not to see.
